Teaching Experience
Current
Adjunct Instructor - Developmental Writing, English Department, Salt Lake Community College
I teach both developmental writing courses at SLCC, Writing 900 and Writing 990. My express focus in each class is to foreground that writing is thinking. By heavily weighing process engagement and stressing reflection, authentic rhetorical situations, and collaborative learning practices to encourage critical thought, my goal is to increase student ownership over their own learning. To achieve this, I work diligently to promote an environment that is safe and fun while requiring persistence and authentic engagement.

Lead Writing Tutor - Student Writing Center, Redwood Campus, Salt Lake Community College
In my nine years in the Student Writing Center, I have had the privilege to work one-to-one with more than 8,200 student writers. Over 60% of the writers I work with are English language learners while many others are non-traditional students due to age, socio-economic condition and background, and disability status. I have worked as Lead Tutor at the main college campus, Redwood, since 2011.
Past
Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader - English Department, Salt Lake Community College
When an initiative to implement supplemental instruction for the benefit of at-risk students received funding at SLCC, I was recommended as the Supplemental Instruction Leader by both my superior in the Student Writing Center, Clinton Gardner, and the instructor of the English 1010 pilot, Brittany Stephenson. The initiative was purposed to provide additional support to students least likely to pass English 1010: those who had previously failed the course, first-generation college students, and other at-risk demographics. As SI Leader, I created and taught two-hours of supplemental curriculum per week while serving similar to teaching assistant. The instructor and I heavily adapted the traditional Supplemental Instruction model (University of Missouri-Kansas City) to fit the needs of our students. The pilot resulted in SI's continuance within the English department beyond my or Mrs. Stephenson's involvement as well as adoption in other departments.

Dedicated Writing Tutor - Online-Plus ENGL 1010 and 2010, English Department, Salt Lake Community College
In an attempt to increase the efficacy of online instruction, SLCC instituted a hybrid composition courses that combined non-synchronous online instruction with weekly in-person instruction one-to-one or in groups. Starting the second semester of the pilot, I worked in the ENGL 1010 Online-Plus and also tutored from the inception in ENGL 2010 Online-Plus. It meetings evaluating the program, I represented the involved tutors.
Designer/Coordinator/Teacher - Author Residency Program, Endeavor Hall
For three years I worked intensively with Endeavor Hall, a K-8 charter school, to create an experimental author residency program. I recruited and trained other professionally published writers, developed curriculum, conducted professional development of teachers, and taught classes. The program employed a process-oriented focus, using creative projects and frequent assessment without grades to promote student ownership of literacy. I also worked on innovating a new language arts curriculum.
